RESIDENTS have been warned about traders pressuring people to buy solar heating systems.
Trading standards officers at Essex County Council have had complaints about salespeople calling at houses and taking advantage of people's ignorance of the new technology, its price and what it could save them on energy bills.
Residents have reported traders quoting massive prices, with a discount if they sign up and pay a large deposit immediately.
Roger Walters, executive member for trading standards, said: "Don't be pressured into signing up for anything that you are not completely sure you want.
"Salespeople will often try and convince you by offering a discount, but you may still end up paying inflated prices.
"Once you sign an agreement it may be difficult to get your money back if you change your mind."
Solar water heating can save the average household around £40 to £45 on annual energy bills, and reduce carbon dioxide emissions.
If you are interested in having solar heating installed in your home, always get more than one quote, so you can compare prices, and try and get recommendations from previous customers.
