A seafront shelter frequently targeted by vandals could see a major overhaul as part of a bid to thwart future attacks.

Frinton and Walton town councillors visited the Kino shelter, in Princes Esplanade, Walton, following yet another attack last month.

Jan King, chairman of the council's recreation and amenities committee, said the shelter is now an "eyesore" and that the council has come up with a plan to make the site more accessible in an attempt to stop attacks, the latest of which caused damage to roof tiles and wooden panels, as well as seeing graffiti daubed on walls.

Mayor Terry Allen said alterations could be made to the Kino shelter to help prevent antisocial behaviour and vandalism.

"We have had a look to see what we could do to eliminate problems at the shelter," he said. "We thought we could do this by making it a more friendly shelter, by making it open to public view.

"We will keep the same roof but change some of the partitions to make it more accessible and more visible in order to reduce the opportunity for people to surreptitiously do things they shouldn't.

"That shelter is targeted from the sides that can't be seen easily, but these changes will give them less opportunity."

Mr Allen said plans will now be drawn up for the scheme.
