The Hippodrome is set to be no more.
Colchester's biggest nightclub, which first opened its doors 20 years ago, is to be transformed with a £1.5 million makeover into Liquid and Envy nightclub.
Work is due to start this week, with the large Hippodrome sign, which has been a prominent feature of Colchester's High Street for 20 years to be taken down, ahead of a launch week at the end of July.
The rolling refurbishment means sections of the nightclub in the grade two-listed former theatre will close, but it will stay open until the launch.
Bosses are promising the venue will become East Anglia's most prestigious nightclub, offering new VIP booths complete with table service for hire.
As in other clubs in the national brand, Envy will only allow people aged 23 and over into the room and will feature classic tracks, disco and party anthems.
Liquid is open to all over 18s, with one room playing chart, dance and urban music, while an urban lounge room will be dedicated exclusively to urban music.
