Families barricaded themselves inside their homes during a two-hour stand-off between armed police and a man in a Colchester street.
An armed response police unit, the dog unit, numerous police officers, ambulances and fire crews were called in following reports that a man had threatened to harm himself, claiming he had a gun.
Officers set up a police cordon around the house in Mill Road while they tried to persuade the man to come out.
