Long-serving solicitor Bryn Smart will be able to toast the good life as he retires after more than 30 years.

Mr Smart is a former senior partner of Colchester firm Ellisons. During his retirement he is hoping to spend more time at his cottage in France - and enjoy the local vintage.

As well as being known for his legal knowlege, Mr Smart is a member of the Chevaliers du Tastevin, based in France, and was twice runner-up in the London finals of the Daily Telegraph Wine Taster of the Year competition.

Mr Smart was educated at the Gilberd School, Colchester, and after leaving in 1963, he went to work as a trainee legal executive with Page Ward and Dayling solicitors in Colchester High Street.

In 1975, having completed his law exams, he started his articles with Harold Oldman and was admitted a solicitor in 1976.

He joined Ellisons as a partner and also lectured in law at Ipswich Civic College on a part-time basis.

In 1994, he was appointed Deputy District Judge in the County Court, and his is also one of the country's longest qualified Notaries Public. He is to continue in both roles and is also due to remain a consultant for Ellisons.

Mr Smart, who has been married to Jane for nearly 40 years, has four children and one grandchild.
