A TOWN centre nightclub has been ordered to reduce the noise coming from speakers inside and from smokers outside their venue, or risk prosecution.

Two noise abatement notices were served on the owners of Club Valentino, St Helen's Lane, Dutch Quarter, Colchester, following a series of complaints by neighbours.

If problems continue, Colchester Council has the option of prosecuting the club for breaching the abatement notices, which carry a maximum penalty of £20,000.

Kevin Holbrook, co-owner of Club Valentino with William Brydon since February this year, refused to comment.

Environmental control manager Beverley Jones said on May 16 council officers were called out following complaints from nearby residents, and the following Friday, they visited two properties and witnessed nuisance caused by loud music and people congregating in the smoking areas.

"We have six people who are complaining to us and we have had 15 complaints made to us by these six people since February," she said.

She confirmed noise abatement orders were served.
