TRADERS will be asked to chip in as town hall chiefs bid to make Colchester's Christmas lights burn brighter.
Colchester Council pledged several months ago to put up the money for this year's illuminations, following the demise of previous funder the Colchester Town Partnership.
Lib Dem Paul Smith, installed as business portfolio-holder after the May 1 elections, said he would keep the promise made by his Conservative predecessor.
But he added, in an attempt to make the display more spectacular, he would be striving to get businesses to put their own money behind it.
"We are looking to work with the local businesses," Mr Smith said.
"A lot of them have traditionally supported the Christmas lights, and I want to ensure we can build on the success of previous years.
"What the council funds will be relatively basic, with no additions to last year's display.
"If possible, we would like to see more lights and also a better show."
