A KIND-HEARTED youngster handed over more than 30kg of items to a foodbank after swapping birthday presents for donations.
Jenson Kerry, from Colchester, turned ten back in August, however did not have a birthday party at the time.
Instead he came to celebrate with friends at the end of October.
And in another break from tradition he decided to ask for items which could be donated to the city's foodbank rather than presents.
Jenson’s mum Kristy said: “It started when his sister Seren did it.
“She missed two birthdays in lockdown, and when she came out, we had a rainbow party at the children’s centre where I work, so not a birthday party but just something similar.
“As it wasn’t a birthday party, she didn’t know what to ask for from friends, so I suggested getting donations for people who don’t have anything.
“I do try and stress to them both they have a lovely life, and there are people that are struggling, especially now with bills, and we do as much as we can for charity.
“She went and delivered it and absolutely loved it, and I think that sort of sowed the seed in Jenson’s mind.
“He said he didn’t need anything, so got donations instead, and he was so excited to drop them off.
“I got really emotional, and what struck us all the most was the queue which was next to us, those using the services and how many are relying on it.
“The staff gave him and Seren a badge and chocolate as well which was lovely.”
Jenson delivered 33.6kg, with foodbank bosses overwhelmed at his efforts.
The Colchester Foodbank also posted the feat online, which was really well-received.
Kristy added: “It just blew up, and I saw some comments saying it inspired them to do the same.
“That is the best part, if it inspires just ten people to do it it’s amazing.
“I just thought as a lad Jenson’s age, most people just want stuff, and that isn’t wrong, I want stuff, but I just thought it was wonderful, and it is nice to share the message.
“Seren even said the next day she wanted to donate more and filled up four black sacks of toys to for St Helena Hospice.
“I am just so proud.”
