PROTESTERS with an international children’s charity took to the street of Braintree to demand Government action.

The charity, Save the Children, visited the town at the heart of the Braintree constituency.

The area, for which Foreign Secretary James Cleverly is MP, was targeted by protesters demanding action to tackle climate change and economic inequality.

Across Friday and Saturday, Save the Children campaigners, and members of the Save the Children’s Youth Advisory Board took to the High Street.

The group says its mission was to share what children have been telling the charity and to ask people from Braintree to share their views on the topics.

The action follows results from recent child hearings Save the Children conducted, which revealed three in four British children think the Government needs to take more action on climate change and inequality.

The results from the child hearings were shared on a board at the campaign stall, and across ad walkers and bikes roaming the High Street.

Campaigners also encouraged residents to write their thoughts about climate change and how it’s impacting children on paper leaves to add to a Tree of Hope’

The charity says these will be collated by members of the Youth Advisory Board, into a scrapbook, to be shared with Mr Cleverly.

Residents were also encouraged to sign a petition for climate action for children.

Husband and wife Ian and Sandra, from Braintree wrote: “It’s a pity Rishi is not going to the COP meeting – we must show we are keen to support it.

“Climate change is so important – it cannot be dismissed lightly. Young people get the message, please pay attention to their future.”

Save the Children campaign manager Beth Howgate said: “We’re here in Braintree because James Cleverly, the MP for Braintree, is the Foreign Secretary and has a unique opportunity to make sure that the UK helps to support children facing poverty and the impact of climate change all over the world.

“We’ve heard from the residents of Braintree this week, how disappointed they are that Rishi Sunak isn’t attending COP27.

“We want the Foreign Secretary to know people in Braintree want him to make a difference and protect children’s futures everywhere.”
