East Bergholt High School has been temporarily closed due to the discovery of dangerous asbestos in classrooms.
During the refurbishment of two science labs, asbestos was discovered in the floor during half term, comprimising twelve classrooms (C block). The school is currently working closely with a professional asbestos company who are advising the precautions they must take and are working hard to solve the problem. C block will only be reopened when air tests indicate it safe to do so.
East Bergholt High School moved their students to online learning on Monday 31st October, but since Tuesday 1st November, some year groups have been taking it in turns to return to school, the rest doing online learning. The school is attempting to set up temporary classrooms so the students are all still able to safely access their education. The school has reassured parents that their children are at no risk and thank them for their support.
Dan Woodcock, headteacher of East Bergholt High School stated "Our primary concern is the safety of our staff and students. We are taking precautions on the advice of a professional asbestos company to manage the situation and to allow students to return to their classrooms safely and as quickly as possible.
We would like to thank our parents for their ongoing support in these unforseen circumstances."
A year 10 student from East Bergholt High School said "I am slightly worried about there being asbestos in other parts of the school too. If they found it in C block it could be in other parts of the school. Also, the year 11's must have been the most affected, as their mock exams were postponed."
