COLCHESTER boxer Lewis Richardson claimed a magnificent gold medal at the Tammer Tournament, in Finland.

The talented middleweight also landed the 'best technical boxer of the tournament' award following a superb performance.

It follows on from the former Thomas Lord Audley School pupil's bronze medal at this summer's Commonwealth Games, in Birmingham.

Writing on Twitter, Richardson said: 'Job done in Finland - gold medal & best technical boxer of the tournament. 3 fights, 3 days, 3 wins against Morocco, Wales & Sweden. Thanks to all at GB Boxing & my sponsors for their continued support on the journey, it wouldn’t be possible without them.'

Richardson had beaten both Rio 2016 bronze medallist Mohammed Rabii and Wales’ Orlando Holley-Sotomi unanimously to reach the gold medal match in Tampere.

The European silver medallist then took on Sweden’s Erik Mendoza to secure his place on the top of the podium and once again perfectly outboxed his opponent to secure gold.

Richardson's GB Boxing team-mates Ramtin Musah and Patrick Brown were also in action on finals day, with both winning silver.

Musah, who after defeating Wales’ Haaris Khan, faced Brazil’s Isais Filho.

In a fiercely-contested light-heavyweight bout, it was the Brazilian who did just enough in the eyes of the judges to seal victory via a 3:2 split decision.

It means that Musah has now taken medals at all three of the tournaments he has added this calendar year, having taken silver and bronze respectively at the Boxam and Belgrade winner competitions.

Concluding the day was Patrick Brown, who was competing in his first international tournament since joining the squad earlier this year.

He was handed a tough task in his heavyweight final as he went up against the 2021 world silver medallist Keno Machado of Brazil.

And despite his best efforts it was Machado who did was able to seal the gold, winning unanimously.

Light-welterweight Patris Mulghalzai and welterweight Owen Rees made their GB Boxing debuts in Finland.

Both were beaten narrowly in the preliminary stages.

Lewis Richardson has thanked his sponsors Datum Group, Shaun Hanney Scaffolding, Maldon Demolition & Jak Finch Hair for their continued support.
