THE chairman of Clacton Carnival is retiring after three decades at the helm.
Alan Wiggins, who is 65, and from First Avenue, became part of the annual event almost 40 years ago, initially volunteering to run the raffle.
Ten years later, he took over the role of chairman from his predecessor Dick Moody, and has led the carnival ever since.
"I've gone from being 20-something to 60-something," said Alan, who is married to Susan.
"It's something that's a part of my life, and I wouldn't have been involved all these years if I didn't enjoy it.
"But I feel like the carnival needs some new blood and some fresh ideas now."
While processions were held in the town as far back as 1920, the Clacton Carnival Association was set up in 1953.
Originally there were just three events - the procession, a fete and fireworks, as well as the crowning of the carnival queen.
Other events to be introduced over the years include the donkey derby, beer-dig and sandcastle competition, which is now run by Alan's wife Susan.
But modern legislation has put the brakes on some of the activities.
One of the main triumphs of the carnival is the charity element, which sees about 40 good causes supported financially each year.
One or two groups are chosen annually to receive the bulk of funds, while lots of other organisations benefit from smaller amounts.
Now, Alan is hoping that someone suitable will step forward to take his place as chairman.
"People skills are absolutely essential," he said. There are 35 members on the committee and about 200 volunteers every year, so it's vital that you treat everybody well."
Also needed for next year's carnival is a new secretary to replace Betty Dawson.
