GLASSES were raised to celebrate the reopening of one of Colchester’s most treasured inns after a £1 million revamp.
The Flag, in Wivenhoe, is once again welcoming punters after lying vacant for years before owners Adel Salah and William Grinsted took over.
The historic former pub in Colchester Road has seen the creation of ten bed and breakfast rooms after plans were approved last year.
It followed the revision of previous blueprints after the Covid pandemic caused disruption.
The major renovation in the 18th Century building cost “just over” £1 million as its owners now celebrate finally reopening the site.
It boasts a boutique dining space, offering visitors the opportunity to eat, drink and stay in a luxury venue.
Guests can enjoy a broad choice of beers, wines and speciality cocktails, while diners can select from a wide-ranging menu.
Inn bosses hope the destination will provide a boost to Wivenhoe’s economy in time for Christmas.
They said there is a “short fall” in the local accommodation market which they are aiming to combat, including proving to be a tempting venue for those visiting the nearby University of Essex.
Mr Salah said: “It’s been a real thrill to hear the reactions of those who came to see us when we reopened and we look forward to welcoming customers into The Flag for its first festive season.
“Creating exactly the look and feel we wanted for this iconic space has taken time, with a few extra complications due to the global pandemic, so it is particularly special to be serving the community again.
“This is at the heart of what we want to do.”
The owner said despite the huge project undertaken, The Flag has retained its “historic charm” despite a “fresh and high-end new look”.
He added: “It will give a new focal point for visitors and locals as they travel through Wivenhoe.
“Everyone can expect a warm welcome and we are looking forward to waving the flag for Wivenhoe as a great place to eat, drink and stay.”
