CHRISTMAS has come early for a specialist health facility in Colchester thanks to the generosity of a festive family business.
St Helena Hospice, in Myland Hall Chase, has just received a welcome delivery of seven Nordmann Firs from Fred Smith Christmas Trees.
The donated, seasonal shrubs, ranging from 4ft to 7ft tall, will be placed around the hospice for both patients and visitors to enjoy.
Some of the trees will also be displayed at the Joan Tomkins Centre, which helps people with bereavement counselling and complementary therapies.
Tim Smith, owner of the family business, in Straight Road in Boxted, said: “Our family has been supporting St Helena Hospice for more than 30 years and will continue to do so.
“We like to support the hospice as it is a wonderful asset to the area and provides a brilliant service.”
Niamh Eve, hospice matron, says the arrival of the trees means Christmas has officially arrived.
She said: “The lovely trees bring comfort to people staying with us as we try to make the atmosphere as homely as possible for patients.
“Sometimes children visiting a parent or grandparent will help decorate them which can be a welcome distraction for them.
“For our staff and volunteers too, the Christmas trees give a sparkle around the buildings, especially for the nurses and clinical support workers on a night shift.”
After the festive period, the trees will be recycled as part of St Helena Hospice’s Tree-cycle Scheme.
