Ravinder Bopara's phenomenal innings of 201 not out for Essex in today's Friends Provident Trophy quarter-final with Leicestershire has re-written the record books.

The incredible knock by the 23-year-old right-hander has usurped Graham Gooch's 198 not out against Sussex in 1982 as Essex's highest ever one-day score.

And it comes crashing in at fourth in the highest one-day scores in the history of domestic cricket.

Although a long way short of Alastair Brown's 268 for Surrey against Glamorgan at the Oval in 2002, it gets close to Alvin Kallicharran's 206 against Oxfordshire in 1984 and Brown's 2003 versus Hampshire in 1997.

It equals Vince Wells' 201 for Leicestershire against Berkshire in 1996.

Bopara has enjoyed a superb start to the summer, having now scored 1,044 runs in all competitions.

His innings spanned 138 balls and included 18 fours and ten sixes.

He passed the highest one-day scores of a number of well-known Essex batsmen from years gone by.

Gooch, Essex's greatest ever batsman, held the top three positions, with innings of 176 against Glamorgan in 1983 and 171 against Nottinghamshire in 1995 to go with his 198.

South African Ken McEwan hammered 162 not out in Essex's encounter with Nottinghamshire in 1983, while former England skipper Nasser Hussain struck 161 not out in 2003 against Glamorgan.

Essex's total of 350 for five is up there in seventh place in their all-time highest one-day scores, trailing their highest total of 391 for five against Surrey, scored last month.

Unfortunately for Leicestershire, it also amends their records.

Their Grace Road ground has featured only three higher one-day scores - the highest being 406 by Leiestershire in 1996.
