PLANS for a residential care home at a former motel site have been given the green light.

The 64-bed centre at Silverwoods in Tenpenny Hill, Thorrington, was originally given permission to be built last August, but the application had to be resubmitted to Tendring Council when it was found that applicants Nelson Housing owned less land at the site than previously thought.

An agreement to create a public footpath had also not been carried out.

Members of Tendring Council's development control committee have now voted to approve the second set of plans, on the proviso that the footpath is completed first.

They went against the recommendation of officers, who said the application was not in line with policies of the Tendring's Local Plan.

Silverwoods was once a motel site before its chalets were used by Colchester Council and Tendring Council for homeless people waiting to be rehoused. In 2005 it was the scene of a fatal fire.
