ROADSIDE stops and checks in Colchester and Clacton signed up 15 waste carriers who were not registered to carry rubbish.
None of the vehicles was illegally carrying waste during the checks at dumps in north Essex on Monday but each was told to register with the Environment Agency at a cost of £149 over three years.
The checks also gave officers the chance to get fly-tipping and other messages across to all the 60 drivers stopped, while police found one driver with no insurance.
Fines for carrying waste without a carrier's licence can be as high as £5,000 and for fly-tipping up to £50,000 or six months imprisonment.
Environment Agency team leader Mike Webley said: "It is important that all waste activities are regulatedand these roadside checks are an invaluable way of enforcing, educatingand getting our messages across."
