A FORMER MP’S annual New Year’s Day walk raised £250 towards the installation of a statue in Colchester High Street.
Sir Bob Russell was joined for the 15th edition of his annual trek by 47 people as they kickstarted 2023.
The circular route took walkers from the war memorial in front of Colchester Castle to High Woods Country Park, and then back to the castle.
It took about two-hours in total to complete the four-mile walk.
Sir Bob, Colchester High Steward, is aiming to raise £80,000 to see a statue of sisters Jane and Ann Taylor built opposite the Town Hall.
The siblings are said to have penned renowned nursery rhyme Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star in their childhood home in West Stockwell Street, Colchester.
Sir Bob said: “It was in 1805 that Jane Taylor wrote a poem which became the nursery rhyme. She and her sister Ann were prolific writers of children’s poems.”
