DETAILED mock-up images have revealed what a proposed new hotel in Colchester could look like if plans are given the go ahead.

Elysium Group, alongside its brand partner Marriott, wants to launch a Moxy Hotel in a currently vacant property at the top of North Hill.

The large commercial building, which was built in 1936 and boasts a neo-Tudor facade, was previously home to the Post Office up until its closure in 2018.

If the blueprints are signed off by planning bosses, the rear of the terraced building will be demolished to provide capacity but the locally-listed front would be retained.

The otherwise abandoned site, sandwiched between Yates and Centurion, would then be transformed into a 73-room hotel, with a restaurant on the ground level.

According to proposals submitted to Colchester Council by Elysium Group, five per cent of the rooms will be appropriately designed for wheelchair accessibility.

Although the building is not listed, it is positioned within a conservation area, so developers are mindful of the hotel being in keeping with the character of the area.

It is understood they are working with the Colchester Archaeological Trust and exploring ways to incorporate mosaic elements and bronze plates into the building.

In the application a spokesman for the project said: “The aim was to achieve a scheme that would harmoniously integrate within its surroundings.

“[We want to] positively reflect the adjacent retail and leisure units located on Colchester High Street forming a continuation of this street.

“It has always been our aspiration to draw reference to Colchester’s Roman past within the development.”

Mark Goacher, Colchester councillor for the Castle Ward, feels positive about the prospect of a new hotel opening in the area.

He said: “I welcome anything which gets this building back into use because what we do not want is massive empty buildings in the city centre.

“I need to properly look at the plans but I know this is not a particularly old building, so it is not a building which is particularly sensitive in that respect.

“Generally I think this it is positive that this site will be brought back to life rather than just sitting there empty and not being put to good use.

“It is also a very positive thing companies Marriot have the confidence that Colchester is an attractive destination and people want to come here."
