A LIFT in Colchester city centre has closed and will not be expected to return to operation for another two months as works begin to have it repaired.

Vineyard Street’s lift, which allows shoppers to access the city centre from Vineyard Street car park, officially shut on Friday with large signs put up to say it was out of service.

The overall cost of the repair is estimated to be more than £80,000 whilst it is restored over the next two months.

It is not the first time the lift has been forced to close, with the council spending £7,000 on new panelling for the lift in 2019  .

Last year, Vineyard Street car park lost nearly a quarter of its spaces after a new cycle lane was built.
