A FEERING man has urged people to “not hesitate” and jump into “rewarding” voluntary work.
Dave Martin first started volunteering 25 years ago manning the reception at St Helena Hospice.
More recently, he has started visiting the hospice every Thursday, alongside his miniature schnauzer Lottie.
Mr Martin said: “Most people use Lottie as a complete distraction. She seems to take their minds off the problems they’re going through.”
The dog owner received training from the Pets As Therapy charity that works with other organisations including a care home which Lottie also visits weekly.
He said: “You need a dog with the right temperament. My last dog was very old, but I could tell almost straight away that Lottie would have the right personality.”
Jenni Homewood, complementary therapy team leader at St Helena Hospice, said: “We all look forward to Lottie and Dave visiting us because pets bring a different dimension to the care we provide, especially for patients who are missing their own pets.
“It’s great for patients to have comfort from the calming effect these lovely precious visitors bring.”
