RAIL enthusiasts are set to enjoy a luxurious steam train journey cross country for a special day-trip from Colchester.

The Steam Dreams Rail Company has announced its newest days trips departing from Essex locations this year.

One of which is set for an early morning departure from Colchester.

Previous journeys have proved popular with guests, and have taken travellers to various locations.

The train will be heading to Carlisle on Saturday, July 15, picking passengers up from Colchester at 6am, with a return at an estimated 11.45pm.

The trip heads through Ipswich, Bury St Edmunds, Ely and Peterborough in its journey across the country.

Day-trippers will travel in vintage train carriages such as Pullman coaches and can choose between three classes with packages which include a traditional breakfast and evening four-course meal.

A spokesman for Steam Dreams ran through the day.

They said: “We begin our journey in Colchester, hauled by a vintage diesel as we make our way through Suffolk and Cambridgeshire to Peterborough.

“Here, we cut across the breadth of the UK to join the West Coast Main Line at Nuneaton heading to Crewe.

“At Crewe, our steam locomotive joins us for the journey north through Cumbria where at Farrington Junction we take the branch off towards Blackburn and onwards to the Yorkshire Dales and stunning world-famous Settle and Carlisle Railway.

“This stunning journey never disappoints, with its dramatic backdrop of beautiful scenery and impressive architecture, including the iconic Ribblehead Viaduct.

“Upon arrival at Carlisle, the time is yours to explore the city at your leisure.

“The historic town boasts many attractions including the ancient Castle, founded in 1092 and the Cathedral with its famous 14th Century stained glass window.

“All passengers will receive a souvenir booklet with a map and details of the route to add interest to your journey.
