COLCHESTER United's under-21s ran out 3-2 winners Hull City at the MKM Stadium, writes BRIAN WALLER.

The U's youngsters secured their first win in eight games in their Professional Development League clash against the play-off chasing Tigers.

Colchester goalkeeper Harrison Chamberlain was called into action on 11 minutes when he denied Trialist C, from a corner.

But the U's took the lead two minutes later through Bradley Ihionvien, who scored following a one-on-one with the home keeper.

Trialist D’s effort went wide for the hosts later in the half, before Kaan Bennett won possession high up the pitch but was denied as the home keeper saved at his near post.

As play entered first-half stoppage time, Hull got back on terms as Glen Sani won a penalty which was despatched by Oliver Green.

After the interval, T’aizo Marcel Dilaver’s cross saw Ihionvien's header saved by Robson.

And soon after, Ihionvien's effort from a cross hit the bar and went off for a goal-kick.

Both teams then scored in a two-minute spell, midway through the half.

Hull took the lead on 65 minutes as after Opoku’s shot was blocked, the ball was passed to Green on the edge of the box and he took a touch before sending a shot into the bottom corner of the net, for his second of the game.

But the U’s reply was almost instant, as Lion Bello's corner found the far corner of the net.

The game then took another turn as Kaan Bennett netted with a low shot into the corner of the net, with 15 minutes remaining.

As Hull tried to respond, a lofted through ball found the run of Trialist A and the full-back received the ball and then shifted it onto his left foot in the box, but his attempt was curling narrowly over the bar.

Colchester held on for a welcome win but a major setback for City's play-off hopes.
