Colchester Roman Society’s Roman Open Day surpassed all expectations – leaving its organisers thrilled.
The event was held at the Roman Visitor Centre in Colchester.
Guests enjoyed activities such as watching chariot racing, playing Roman board games and meeting costumed re-enactors.
Although the Roman Society has run similar events for four years, its education and outreach manager Samantha Rowley said this event had surpassed the others.
About 500 people made their way to the event to travel back in time to when Britain was part of the Roman Empire with Colchester at its heart.
Some of the highlights included the Roman Mosaic Demonstration by Lawrence Payne, a master mosaicist.
There were also military demonstrations by the Colchester Roman Society.
Samantha said both attractions were very interactive and allowed guests to get involved.
Children were able to hold swords and chat to the costumed re-enactors.
Samantha said: “It brings our Roman history to life" and said the atmosphere on the day was fantastic.
Fortunately, anyone who missed out on Saturday’s fun won’t have to wait too long for the next opportunity. The next event will be in September.
