THE mayor of Mersea has revealed his ambition to succeed the island’s incumbent Conservative councillor.

Carl Powling will be vying for the Mersea and Pyefleet seat as Patricia Moore steps aside ahead of next month’s local elections.

He said: “After serving on West Mersea Town Council for the past eight years and having the honour of being the town mayor for seven of those years, I am now looking to take the next step.

“My passion and dedication for serving our community is well known and I would like to continue this for the whole ward on the city council.

“Over the past eight years I have dedicated my time and passion for our community from getting West Mersea Neighbourhood Plan off the ground, leading our community through the covid crisis, getting funding for local projects and working on many others.

“Succeeding retiring councillor Pat Moore for the ward would be a great honour and I work tirelessly for whole community.”

  • Also fighting for the seat is Independent candidate John Akker, Libby Kirkby-Taylor (Green), William Hayton (Lab), John Knight (Lib Dem) and Sophie Preston-Hall (Reform UK).
