Emergency workers attended Lexden Park Local Nature Reserve, off Church Lane, after concerns were raised for a man’s welfare.
Officers arrived shortly before 6am and subsequently pronounced him dead at the scene.
An Essex Police spokesman said: “We were called to concerns for the welfare of a man in the Church Lane area of Colchester shortly after 5.50am on Monday.
“Officers attended and, sadly, the man was pronounced dead at the scene.
“His death is being treated as unexpected but not suspicious and a file will be prepared for the coroner.”
One resident travelling through the park said he saw officers still at the scene at about 8.30am.
Families with their young children were out enjoying the popular green space following the police leaving the scene by about 10.30am
