CONCERNED parish councillors have raised objections to plans for a new drive-thru restaurant to open in Colchester.

The plans could see the global fast-food giant Burger King open a second site in the city, adding to their existing location in High Street.

The new location would fill an empty unit at Stanway’s Stane Park.

Writing to Colchester Council’s planning department, a spokesperson for Stanway Parish Council said: “I can confirm Stanway Parish Council objects to this proposal as it will cause an increase in traffic in an already congested area.”

The plans outline the redevelopment, which says existing pedestrian and cycle links through the leisure park will be retained and a new drive-thru lane will be introduced.

The traffic in the area is already problematic following the opening of other big-name brands including Marks and Spencer and Aldi.

Addressing the congestion issues previously, a spokesman for the property developers Churchmanor said: “We are aware that at peak times there has been congestion on the Sainsbury’s roundabout, which in turn has caused delays in exiting the car park.

“We are working with Essex Highways to examine solutions to this as a matter of urgency.”

At peak times, some shoppers have reported being forced to wait at a standstill for up to half an hour to leave the retail park.
