A DRIVER who caught someone travelling the wrong way up a major road near Braintree has called it the “scariest thing he’s seen” in 30 years of driving.

Terry Crouch was driving on the A120, coming out of Braintree heading towards Bradwell just after 8am on Saturday, May 13.

What appeared to be a regular drive turned to shock when he witnessed a driver swerve onto the oncoming side of the dual carriageway.

The video, which was shared on social media, shows the car driving past oncoming traffic for a short time, before heading back onto the right side of the road.

Mr Crouch said: “I was just driving out of Braintree on the A120 just before the splitting of the dual carriageway.

“The car took a last-minute swerve across the chevrons into the face of oncoming traffic.

“Although hard to see on the dash cam footage the car went directly at two or three cars, a motorcycle and a lorry without hitting them, before swerving back into the correct carriageway.”

Mr Crouch, who has been driving for three decades, described the incident as “the scariest he’s seen”.

However, he questions whether the driver was just confused by the layout.

He said: “I’ve been driving for 30 years and been local to Braintree for all that time and I think the car’s actions are probably the scariest I’ve seen.

“I think the person driving got confused somehow with the layout of the road - although I cannot see how.

“Chevrons are generally an indication that the carriageways are very much meant to be separate.

“To start with I thought the driver was just a jack-the-lad having a mad moment but when they re-joined the road, they didn’t exceed any speed limit all the way to Colchester, which makes me think they read the road completely wrong.

“I was very much tempted to inform the police, citing it as a reckless driving incident but felt they needed the benefit of the doubt.”

Essex Police has said it encourages anyone with dash cam footage of incidents on the road to submit it through Extra Eyes, which is run by SERP – the Safer Essex Roads Partnership.
