LEXDEN Choral Society will perform a series of famous oratorio and opera choruses at a weekend concert later this month, with the group belatedly celebrating its 30th birthday.

The Gala Concert, which will take place at St Botolph’s Church on June 17, will see the choral society perform some of the most well-known works in the opera genre, including Handel’s Messiah, Orff’s Carmina Burana, Bizet’s Carmen, and Puccini’s Madam Butterfly.

John Chillingworth will conduct the choir, whilst the Camerata East Orchestra will be led by Helen Medlock.

Colchester Royal Grammar School Choir will also be making a guest appearance during the evening.

Sarah Blake, who founded Lexden Choral Society in 1992 and still serves as the group’s director, said: “I am very much looking forward to the society’s Gala Concert at St Botolph’s Church on June 17 at 7.30pm when their highly talented conductor, John Chillingworth, skilfully directs the choir.

“I think it will be a wonderful concert and I would love to welcome and share with you, the Colchester community and friends’, this special evening of music.”

Tickets for the concert, which cost £17 for adults and £10 for under-18s and full-time students, are currently on sale online at lexdenchoral.org, or over the phone by calling 01206 543280.
