A POPULAR seafood restaurant on Mersea Island has announced plans to close its doors… but it isn’t goodbye forever.

The team behind Seafood at Dawn, in East Road, East Mersea, instantly worried fans of the eatery on social media earlier this week.

Addressing their 1,800 Facebook followers, the team said: “[We] are sad to say goodbye to East Mersea.

“We have had such a great time with loyal customers who have supported us through some strange times and we truly thank you all for that.

“We would never have imagined all the love and support we’ve gained and how much you’ve all made Seafood at Dawn grow.”

It isn’t all bad news, however, as it was announced the business would be relocating to elsewhere on the island.

The announcement continued: “As times change we have to adapt, so it is with so much joy we announce we are currently proceeding with new premises in West Mersea.

“It feels right that Seafood at Dawn is expanding and the new opportunities we will be given at this new premises.

“Our last day [at the current premises] will be on December 4 this year. Keep an eye out for more updates.

“The premises we leave will be available from January 1 for any interested parties.”

The restaurant was opened by Paige Bennett and her business partner Steve Prosser in January 2020 after the closure of Mehalahs, which occupied the same premises.

Paige had worked at the former restaurant for three years before it closed and jumped at the opportunity to start her own business on the site when it became available.

The business has gone from strength to strength, consistently receiving five-star reviews from delighted diners.

This week’s announcement attracted comments from several well-wishers congratulating Paige and her team on their relocation, with one fan saying: “I panicked when I started reading this and thought you were closing down.

“So glad you’re not. Absolutely wonderful food. Good news for you all with the bigger opportunities.”

Another regular customer dubbed the restaurant as “the best reason to visit Mersea”.
