NEW Colchester United signing Ellis Iandolo is hoping his versatility can be an asset for the club this season.

The 25-year-old is looking to impress after recently joining the U's on a two-year contract from Swindon Town, for an undisclosed fee for the defender.

Iandolo was utilised as both a left-sided defender and a central midfielder, during his time with the Robins.

And having been reunited with Ben Garner, whom he played under at Swindon in the 2021/22 team that made it to the League Two play-offs, the Kent-born player is keen to help his new team wherever they need him.

Iandolo told the U’s website: “I see myself as a left wing-back – that’s where I played a lot under the gaffer when I was at Swindon.

“I think he sees that as my best position as well but I move around a bit and can play in midfield.

“I played ten to 15 games there the season he was there as well, so I’m comfortable in either of those two positions really.

“I hope my versatility can be a big asset for the club.

“Whatever the team needs me to do, that’s what I’ll provide.”

Iandolo is now fighting fit again, having been sidelined for two months with a heel injury sustained in training.

The versatile defender returned in the final week of the 2022-23 campaign and is now looking forward to the big kick-off with the U’s.

“I had a little bit of an unfortunate injury, towards the back end of last season,” said Iandolo, who made 130 appearances for Swindon.

“I came back fit for the last week and I’ve had a good off season – I’m feeling fit and strong and I’m raring to go.

Iandolo has just returned from a training camp in Spain with his new Colchester team-mates.

The U’s are now preparing for their first pre-season friendly of the summer at Maldon and Tiptree, next Saturday.

He added: “I’ve played against a lot of the boys and I know of a few.

“I didn’t know them personally when I signed but I think that’s quite a nice thing – it gives me a clean slate.

“It’ll be nice to get to know a fresh bunch of lads.”
