COLCHESTER Hospital has opened a new butterfly centre to support the families and carers of patients who are in the last 12 months of life.
The centres, which are funded by the Colchester and Ipswich Hospitals Charity, are open on weekdays from 9.30am and 3.30pm and offer a calming environment for those who have been supporting their loved ones through a trying emotional period.
Butterfly volunteers also play a key role in the service, providing comfort for patients reaching their final months.
People can drop in for information, non-clinical advice, and signposting from the butterfly service coordinators, who are funded by the Colchester and Ipswich Hospitals charity.
Karen Hobbs, clinical project lead for end-of-life care at the East Suffolk and North Essex Trust, said: “[The butterfly centre] will give relatives and carers all-important time away from the bedside, while our fantastic volunteers will also be on hand to offer support, a cup of tea or simply a listening ear.
“The centres will also help us to provide practical information and signpost patients and families to other agencies where necessary.”
Colchester Hospital’s butterfly centre is found close to the entrance of the Gainsborough Wing.
