A DRIVING instructor narrowly avoided a head-on crash with a car going the wrong way on a Colchester roundabout.
Kieran Clarke, who has been a motoring instructor for 32 years, was driving round North Station roundabout shortly before midday today.
The 56-year-old was then left stunned to see another vehicle incorrectly heading in the opposite direction just metres away near Bergholt Road.
In footage captured by the Dedham Vale Driving School owner's dashcam and sent to the Gazette, a Vauxhall can be seen driving the wrong way round the roundabout.
The car is shown driving towards Mr Clarke’s vehicle in the lane closest to the centre of the roundabout having turned left towards Mile End Road.
Mr Clarke said: “You are generally driving quite slowly due to the road layout and the amount of traffic but I’m sure there will be an accident at some point as this does seem to be happening regularly.
“Thankfully I was in the other lane to the driver who was going the wrong way.
“It does happen regularly and as a driving instructor, I always anticipate the unexpected.
“There are ahead signs on the lights and ahead only written on the road, yet people still turn left into the oncoming traffic.”
The latest near-miss comes after at least two others drivers were also caught on camera travelling the wrong way on the same roundabout.
Mile End councillor Martin Goss has now urged drivers to contact the police if they see dangerous driving on the roads.
He said: “I had to watch it several times, it is just crazy.
“What can you say? These people shouldn’t be driving.
“It is one of the worst clips I have seen.
“We have had a few clips now from the roundabout of drivers going the wrong way and residents have said they have witnessed similar incidents, and at this rate there may be a serious collision.
“Human beings can have momentary lapses, but there is a momentary lapse and then there is driving completely the wrong way, which is just pure incompetence.
“I would ask people to contact the police and try and get these drivers off the road as they shouldn’t be driving.
“Whether it is perhaps an elderly person or someone with health issues, their licence needs reviewing, it was a very close call.”
