MOTORISTS are facing weeks of disruption and delays after temporary traffic lights were installed on a busy Colchester road.

Essex Highways workers are currently carrying out roadworks in St Andrew's Avenue near to the Greenstead roundabout.

The works, which started earlier this month, will see the footway on the northern side of the road upgraded and widened to two metres in width.

There will also be a new two-metre-wide pavement installed on the southern side which will join the existing footway.

The changes, which will see a new signal-controlled crossing installed as well, are being made as part of the Colchester Rapid Transit System project.

As a result of the works, drivers travelling in the area are having to condend with delays of up to 20 minutes - and will have to for many more weeks.

A statement from Essex Highways said: "As part of the developing Colchester Rapid Transit System works, we will improve sections of St Andrew’s Avenue for pedestrians and cyclists.

The roadworks are set to finish in late August with work taking place between 8am and 5pm.

Due to these works, a 24-hour road closure is also in place in The Chase, with access still available for residents.
