CONCERNS have been raised about the safety of a notorious Colchester roundabout after multiple drivers were caught going the wrong way.

North Station Roundabout has been at the centre of debate after several drivers have been seen driving the wrong way around it.

Various dashcam footage captured has shown cars driving in the way direction after turning left towards Mile End Road and Bergholt Road.

Colchester driving instructor Kieran Clarke, who has been a motoring instructor for 32 years, was driving round North Station roundabout shortly before midday earlier this week.

The 56-year-old was then left stunned to see another vehicle incorrectly heading in the opposite direction just metres away near Bergholt Road.

“I’m sure there will be an accident at some point as this does seem to be happening regularly”, he said.

“Thankfully I was in the other lane to the driver who was going the wrong way.”

Other residents have expressed concerns over the roundabout being too confusing, and the signage not being clear enough.

Speaking on the roundabout, Mile End councillor Martin Goss said: “Because I know the area, I know how to navigate it.

“The junction and roundabout has been in existence since round about 2000 so it has been in the city for nearly 25 years.

“I think it may be time to check the safety of the roundabout.

“We should ask Essex County Council and Lee Scott to get a safety audit done, get them to look at signage and road markings and make sure everything is up to date.”

A spokesman for Essex Highways said: “Any resident concerned about road signs, road markings or speed limits on any Essex Highways road can inform their local county councillor, who can raise the issue at the next Local Highway Panel (LHP).

“Alternatively, if you spot any missing or damaged signage on the roundabout, this can be reported to us via our online reporting tool, which can be found at essexhighways.org/tell-us.”

Essex County Council highways boss Lee Scott added: “I am most happy and open to discuss North Station Roundabout with Councillor Goss at any time convenient to both of us.”
