ROBBIE Cowling insists Colchester United are willing to be patient in order to land ‘quality’ signings this summer – and have a competitive budget in which to do so.

The U’s have so far snapped up three new players in the transfer window, with Owen Goodman, Nico Lawrence and Ellis Iandolo all arriving at the JobServe Community Stadium.

Colchester are on the hunt for more additions, as head coach Ben Garner strives to make his side a competitive force in League Two this season.

The U’s are talking to prospective new signings and chairman Mr Cowling has stressed the club are working hard to bring the right players in.

Mr Cowling, speaking at the club’s annual Open Day, said: “We had to do quite a bit of recruitment last January and I think people would agree, we did it pretty well.

“It was needed and we did a good job of it.

.”At the time, I was explaining to Dmitri (Halajko) how difficult it is sometimes to recruit in January.

“It’s a difficult window but actually, we’re finding that this summer is even more difficult to recruit, in some respects.

“It’s a much longer window and one of the things we’re going for is quality and not quantity.

“It’s a long window and some of the people we’re talking to, they are still waiting to see what options are out there.

“Sadly, Colchester isn’t top of everybody’s list to want to come to but it’s a good club and we do want to attract people here.

“We’re trying to get quality and quality has options, so we’re just trying to be patient.

“We’ve got good people doing the recruitment who are working extremely hard.

“If you look at the clubs that are in the league this year with your Wrexhams, your Notts Countys and your Stockports, there’s quite a lot of money washing around, so it’s difficult for that reason.

“But we’ve got a competitive budget.”

Meanwhile, Mr Cowling praised Colchester's hard-working staff, following another successful Open Day event.

He said: "You can't underestimate how important the staff are and the job they do.

"We see that again on days like today, what a great job everyone's doing.

"That hard work that goes into everything that the Colchester United staff do, they're the unsung heroes at times."
