THE leader of Colchester Council said residents’ lives have been made “more difficult” after a councillor resigned from her role.
Catherine Bickersteth (Lab) stepped down from her Highwoods seat after revealing she is moving away from Colchester.
Ms Bickersteth was just eight months into her role at the town hall having won a by-election in December last year.
Colchester Council leader David King said: “I wish Catherine well but know resignations make life more difficult for residents, especially when just a few months on from her election.
“It means another by-election and getting to know another councillor, and that's hard work for all concerned and a cost to the council.
“It is important that we fill the gap as soon as possible.”
Ms Bickersteth’s former ward colleagues Alison Jay (Lib Dem) and Jocelyn Law (Lab) remain in their roles.
Mr King added: “In the meantime, residents can rely upon the remaining councillors.
“As the Highwoods county councillor and as leader of the city council, I will do all I can to help residents through the next months, and any new councillor, on election.”
