COLCHESTER United have re-signed goalkeeper Tom Smith on a permanent basis.

The 21-year-old has joined the U's on a two-year deal, following his release by Premier League side Arsenal at the end of last season.

Smith, who has recently been on trial at League One new boys Stevenage, spentΒ the second half of last season on loan at the U's.

He made six appearances for Colchester towards the end of last season, helping Ben Garner's side stay in League Two.

Smith told www.cu-fc.com: "It’s been a long few weeks since leaving Arsenal, but now I’m delighted it’s done and I can get going for the season.

"The bulk of the team is still there along with the manager and the style of play, so it made it quite an easy decision. I didn’t feel like I was out of place, it’s just like home."

Smith is their fifth signing of the summer, following Nico Lawrence, Ellis Iandolo, Owen Goodman and Mauro Bandeira in joining the U's.

He will compete with Goodman,Β Sam Hornby and Ted Collins for a place between the sticks for the U's, this season.

Colchester boss Ben Garner stated on Saturday that he was keen to bring in 'one or two new signings' this week, ahead of the big kick-off, this weekend.

The U's start the new campaign with a home clash with Swindon Town, on Saturday.
