COLCHESTER’S Conservative group has announced its candidate for the upcoming Highwoods by-election.
Highwoods resident Paul Smith will fight for the seat after Catherine Bickersteth (Lab) stepped down from the role last week.
The by-election to fill her vacant seat is expected to take place in early September.
Mr Smith said: “I have lived in Highwoods for 30 years. My children grew up and went to school here and it is where I plan to stay.
“I care deeply about it and having recently retired, now feel I have the time to step up and do what I can for my local community.
“I am really looking forward to getting out there and talking to as many people as possible.”
The candidate says he plans to fight a council decision to charge for garden waste collections from January.
Group leader Paul Dundas said: “I really can’t think of a better candidate for Highwoods than Paul Smith.
“He brings a wealth of experience and talent and would be a fantastic advocate for Highwoods.
“I am looking forward to getting out there on the campaign trail with him.”
