A CHESS club has organised a memorial chess challenge in memory of a well-known Colchester player.
ColCHESSter has organised a very special event to celebrate the life and achievements of Dr Johnathan Penrose OBE on what would have been his 90th birthday.
The memorial match will take place at the Town Hall and is aided by the Mayor’s Charities.
It will feature a simultaneous exhibition by Britain’s leading chess player, Grandmaster Michael Adams and rising star in chess, Ruqayyah Rida.
Johnathan, who dominated British Chess in the 1950s and 1960s, will also be honoured with the opening of the city’s first public chess park at the Mercury Theatre.
The Memorial Chess Challenge will take place on October 7th.
