A WOMAN beater who strangled his ex-partner and threw a vacuum cleaner at her head has been jailed for three and a half years.

Ben Barnsley, 32, was put behind bars after admitting a string of offences relating to two incidents. 

In the first incident in January last year Barnsley attacked his former partner after an argument causing her to be injured. 

Samantha Wright, prosecuting, said: “The pair had been on a night out drinking before returning to a flat in Beckford Road, Mistley, where they started arguing.

“Mr Barnsley called the victim a ‘slag’, threw a Wellington boot at her and a Hoover. The Hoover hit the victim in the head.

“She went upstairs to check her injuries when he pushed her, causing her to stumble onto the bed.”

Whilst on the bed, the two began grappling and Barnsley strangled the victim ‘for several seconds’.

She broke free and rolled off the bed when he stood over her and threw a pint glass, which she blocked with her hands causing cuts and bleeding.

The victim got away but Barnsley kicked at her leg causing her to stumble down the stairs.

During another incident six months later in August, Barnsley led police on a chase after failing to stop for them. 

Ms Wright added: “The defendant was driving a van that caught the attention of police officers on mobile patrols.

“It was a DPD delivery wan which would not have been making deliveries at that time, half past midnight.

“Officers tried to get the defendant’s attention with blue lights and sirens but he ignored them and a chase ensued.

“The defendant was followed to a dead-end in Clockhouse Way, Braintree, where he left the vehicle and fled on foot.”

Barnsley, of Bartram Avenue, Braintree, was chased by police and when confronted he ‘rugby tackled’ one of the officers before they could restrain him.

He underwent a breathalyser test and was found to have a blood alcohol level of 100 milligrams of alcohol per decilitre of blood, 20mg over the legal limit.

Barnsley was convicted of assault occasioning ABH, criminal damage to a property valued under £5,000, intentional strangulation, assault of an emergency worker and driving under the influence of alcohol.

He appeared in Basildon Crown Court on Monday to be sentenced by Judge Samantha Leigh.

Barnsley was jailed for three and a half years and is disqualified from driving for 18 months.
