RESIDENTS in Colchester are being invited to take part in a special stroll to raise funds which will be used to help young patients.

The Welly Walk, organised by the Colchester & Ipswich Hospitals Charity, will take place on September 24.

Participants will be able to enjoy a brand-new interactive route while meeting mascots Rosie and Puddles and supporting the charitable effort.

The 5km walk will lead families and friends on a woodland wonder through the Suffolk countryside surrounding Jimmy’s Farm and Wildlife Park, at Wherstead near Ipswich.

Jimmy Doherty, ambassador of The Children’s Appeal, said: “It’s our absolute pleasure to host the Welly Walk for a third year in support of The Children’s Appeal.

“The Welly Walk is the perfect way to bring your family together and enjoy the outdoors whilst supporting such a worthwhile project.

“We’re excited to see the new Welly Walk route in action and welcome the participants into our park afterwards, hopefully with the opportunity to explore our exciting new area. See you in September.”

The Children’s Appeal is raising money for a multi-million pound redevelopment of the Children’s Department at Ipswich Hospital.

Work is underway to transform the ward areas and create further inpatient rooms, a school room and the new children’s assessment unit, in turn improving the experience for young patients and their families.

Colchester & Ipswich Hospitals Charity will use money raised through the Welly Walk to help fund new indoor and outdoor sensory and play spaces and equipment.

Kate Stockton, children’s matron at Ipswich Hospital, said: “I’m so proud of the team, who do outstanding work every day. However, the facilities are tired and no longer fit for purpose.

“It’s so important to have child-friendly surroundings for young people and their families, which is why we are creating a modern, light and more homely environment with this redevelopment.”
