A DRIVER who almost caused a car crash has been fined more than £700 by the courts.

Timothy Welch, of Military Road, Colchester, faced one charge of driving without due care and attention after he accelerated in his BMW along Hardies Point, in the Hythe.

The offence took place on the evening of December 28, when the 40-year-old "accelerated so hard causing the vehicle to lose control by sliding sideways, narrowly avoiding another vehicle", according to court papers.

Magistrates considered the case in Welch’s absence at the start of the month, finding him guilty and finding him £706.

The 40-year-old also had his driving licence endorsed with six penalty points.
