A HOSPITAL in Colchester is celebrating after being shortlisted for a prestigious national award.

Cygnet Hospital, in Boxted Road, has been recognised by the Royal College of Psychiatrists for its work in supporting men with mental health needs and learning disabilities.

The 54-bed service, shortlisted in the Psychiatric Team of the Year 2023: Intellectual Disability category, also provides a range of intensive support and rehabilitation services for men with autism spectrum disorders.

Cygnet is the only independent healthcare provider to be named in the list, which is made-up of nationwide NHS organisations and other independent providers.

Held annually, the RCPsych Awards mark the highest level of achievement within psychiatry and are designed to reward excellent practice in the field of mental health.

Cygnet Hospital Colchester’s medical director, Dr Rajesh Rama Iyer, said: “The team provides holistic care by liaising with a myriad of professionals, families and carers. Individuals are supported fully through every step of their progress before, during and after their hospital stay.

“The nomination reflects excellent work provided by team in supporting individuals with Intellectual Disabilities.

“It also recognises the work put in by the dedicated team in providing person centred care. Their continued passion to excel and provide innovative practice is established through positive discharges from hospital to community and reduction of long term hospital stay.”

Ward manager Will Anderson-White added: “This is a huge accomplishment and the proudest moment of my career so far.

“Our team have worked tirelessly to improve standards in every aspect. From physically adapting our environments to implementing innovative support and engagement policies.

“Not to mention leading on a nationwide learning disability- specific care plan pilot, we really have outdone ourselves.”

The Royal College of Psychiatrists is the professional medical body responsible for supporting psychiatrists throughout their careers from training through to retirement, and in setting and raising standards of psychiatry in the United Kingdom.

Winners will be announced on November 8.
