VISITORS to Colchester’s Roman Circus will be given fresh insight to the heritage site thanks to the installation of a new interpretation panel.
The only known chariot racing track in Roman Britain, the circus is located at Nero Court, in Napier Road, and the new panel explains the significance of the site.
The new interpretation panel is located at the eastern end of the Circus where the foundations are marked out on the ground, and is is part of an ongoing project to improve the public’s access Colchester’s heritage by installing interpretation panels at key locations.
Rosemary Jewers, who funded the panel in memory of her husband, a cameraman for BBC and ITV Anglia, said her husband would often tell her stories of times he would film on Colchester heritage sites.
She said: “My late husband, Tony, loved history, especially that of the Romans and the Egyptians.
“He would often tell me about some of the occasions he went to film excavations which were taking place in or around Colchester, and I think Tony would have wholeheartedly approve of this panel in his memory.
“The panel, in the famous mission statement of the BBC, informs, educates, and entertains.”
