A CROCHET artist is decorating post boxes with colourful toppers in Brightlingsea.
The anonymous artist is known to local people as “Bank-sea” and shared their works in summer 2021, when people saw the post box toppers around the town for the first time.
Bank-sea is orienting their work towards landmarks and celebrities, giving the topper near the museum a cat theme, featuring local celebrity Max, the Brightlingsea cat.
The topper near Tesco’s usually celebrates local and national events like the Eurovision Song Contest, where Essex-born singer Sam Ryder competed for the UK, and the Jubilee and coronation festivities.
Depending on the season, there can be specific Christmas, Easter or Remembrance toppers on display.
Right now, the topper pays homage to the 60th anniversary of the popular TV show “Dr Who”.
Bank-sea is thought to be a local “who just likes to create happiness out of wool, and make people smile”, a resident said.
They are rumoured to work with an accomplice, as the penguins of last year’s Christmas topper were knitted, and not crochet.
The local sorting office has given full permission for the toppers, as long as they do not interfere or cover over the boxes.
