A VILLAGE in Colchester described as "quaint" and "quintessential" has been named as one of the best in the UK, according to a consumer watchdog.
Which? has ranked Dedham 36th on a list comprised of the greatest towns and villages in the country after more than 9,000 members cast their votes.
The survey asked members to rate locations they had visited based on the quality of their food and drink, tourist attractions, shopping and more.
Each of the locations on the list received a Destination Score out of a possible 100 per cent as well as being ranked out of five stars in various categories.
Wells in Somerset and Avebury in neighbouring Wiltshire were named the best spots in the whole of the UK.
The full list of locations for what Which? members consider to be the best towns and villages in the UK can be seen on the website here.
Dedham was the only Essex destination to be named on the list, and excelled in the scenery and attractiveness categories.
How was Dedham rated by Which?
The village was given an overall destination score of 74 per cent which was not too far behind Wells and Avebury which scored 82 per cent.
For the individual categories, Dedham was awarded a five out of five for its scenery, four for its attractiveness and four for its tourist attractions.
Meanwhile, it got a three out of five for food and drink and peace and quiet but only a one out of five rating for its shopping options.
On its VisitEssex page, Dedham is described as a "picturesque village nestled in the heart of the Dedham Vale".
The listing reads: "Dedham's quaint High Street has an abundance of independent shops, cosy pubs and quintessential tearooms, including the famous Wilkin and Sons tearoom, the Essex Rose, perfect for some light refreshments or a delicious cream tea.
"Admire the Georgian architecture and timber framed buildings as you wander down the High Street.
"At the end you will find the Dedham Arts and Crafts Centre, in an historic converted church. The Centre houses many art treasures all carefully crafted by local artisans."
