A FED-UP councillor has said he is “peed off” with yobs urinating in public space near Colchester Magistrates’ Court.
Concerns have been raised about the shameless behaviour blighting St Botolph’s Circus and the surrounding area.
Castle ward councillor Mark Goacher said he has become frequently contacted by residents sick of the problem.
He said on Sunday he saw a middle-aged man urinating over the seat of the bus stop next to the courthouse, in Magdalen Street.
“He and his mate were laughing their heads off and there was a poor elderly lady trying to avert her eyes,” said Mr Goacher.
“The issue seems to be people leaving the pubs and clubs in town and thinking they can use that area as a urinal while they either wait for a bus or head off to New Town.
“It is totally out of order. There is, after all, a public toilet not far away in Osborne Street.
“You would think these people would think twice and maybe at least go somewhere a bit more quiet.”
The problem is just one of the anti-social issues residents say are troubling the St Botolph’s Circus area.
The bus stop which was urinated on is regularly shattered by vandals and planters lining the fence in Magdalen Street are often ripped up.
Mr Goacher added: “People seem to think it is funny. There is a lot of low-level anti-social behaviour in this area.”
The councillor said problems also stem from the underpass, which he now avoids.
He called for further investment in policing from the Government to fund extra patrols in Colchester city centre.
“I think we all need to be vigilant but there must be CCTV in that area due to the court. I hope it is of a high quality,” said Mr Goacher.
“We need the police to keep an eye on that area but we all know they’re already stretched for resources in Colchester.
“We need radical thinking from the Government so we can get a grip on a lack of policing presence in the city centre.”
