COLCHESTER Council is aiming to build more than 900 dwellings every year in order to meet the Government's housing targets… and plans are in place for where the properties are going to go.
During the 16-year period running from 2017 to 2033, Colchester has been set a requirement of building 14,720 dwellings at an annual rate of approximately 920 dwellings per year.
Proportionally, 30 per cent of that total must be classed as affordable housing.
Across England, the Government is aiming to build 300,000 new homes per year by the mid-2020s, though the Government’s levelling up, housing, and communities committee has concluded that target is only likely to be met if mandatory local housing targets remain in place.
With Colchester’s target remaining in place, housing targets have been set for dozens of areas across the borough for the next financial year, which started in March.
There are targets for 33 dwellings to be built in Berechurch Hall Road, as well as 60 at the Cowdray Centre in Mason Road, 30 at the Riverside Centre in North Station Road, and 18 at the former museum resource centre in Ryegate Road.
Land off Halstead Road will be the site of 50 new dwellings, with 150 to be built in the Chesterwell development, 33 at Garrison K2 in Butt Road, 15 on the former site of Essex County Hospital, 18 at Elfreda House in Iceni Way, and 40 as part of the Gosbecks Phase 2.
In Stanway, there is a target for 90 homes in Lakelands and 28 in Chitts Hill.
