CHILDREN in Colchester are being encouraged to take up squash with the support of a sporting facility which is committed to helping youngsters get more active.

Lexden Rackets and Fitness Club, in Chitts Hill, is set to host Squash Stars sessions through the rest of the year, starting next month.

The initiative is open to children aged between five and nine and teaches children the fundamental skills needed to play squash.

The launch of the squash sessions comes after the Government set a target to get 3.5million more people physically active by 2030.

England Squash, the national governing body for the sport, has committed to continuing the Squash Stars programme.

Its head of partnerships and programmes Joanna Rowbottom said the sport is “a great way to help young people get active”.

“The focus at the sessions is very much on having fun, getting active, and making new friends. We want all the children who take part to soar in every aspect of their life and that starts with a positive experience with sport,” she explained.

The six-week programme costs £42 and every child who signs up will be given a free racket, t-shirt, ball, goggles, and kit bag.
